The things you read these days

Journalists shouldn't add commentary to their news reporting. But I sure can. Here's a couple things I read today that I thought needed some snark.

On news that Washington Mutual shares have fallen to new lows (currently about $3.80, down from $40 one year ago), a Reuters report has this quote: "'There is no reason for someone with an insured deposit to feel they need to run to the branch to pull it out,' Shanley added." Um ... reading that quote on NYTimes.com is probably plenty reason to make someone run to their local WaMu branch.

On news that the U.S. Geological Survey says there is lots of new oil waiting to be extracted from under the Artic ice cap: "As melting ice caps have opened up prospects that were once considered too harsh to explore, a race has begun among Arctic nations, including the United States, Russia, and Canada, for control of these resources." So, now that we're warming the planet with our fossil-fuel emmissions, we can access more oil to warm it still further? Grrreeaatt idea, there!
