According to research in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, Sony's AIBO robotic dog helped to alleviate loneliness for people in old folks' homes just as much as a real dog. I guess this type of discovery will be considered quaint in 20 years, but it's still pretty amazing for me right now.
