Remembering Tiananmen

Eighteen years ago, tens of thousands of students and workers protested corruption and demanded more political freedoms in China. I was in elementary school at the time and watching Western press coverage of the event on TV along with my peers. I remember standing up in class, along with my classmates, to show solidarity with the protesters. It didn't matter that our teacher had nothing to do with the Chinese government. We simply felt the need to show the powers-that-be that they rule at the consent of the governed.

"The ruler is like the boat, and the common people the water. The water supports the boat or capsizes it." - Xun Zi (313-238 BC)
