That's the question one MIT research group is trying to figure out with their Music Universals Study, which offers a 15-minute online test that tries to link culture with music appreciation and understanding. I took the test, and am very interested to see the results after they close the study.
CNET News' Michael Kanellos is one of my favorite tech journalists, and has an article about the MIT study. He infers the right question: Why do humans appreciate music? Is it something that evolved as humans used language, and why do monkeys not care without a chord is off or not? Being the creationist I am, I would ask: Is appreciating music one example of what it means to be "made in the image of God?"
