Getting started in journalism means subversion and networking

Wow. Just recently, I was kicking myself in the butt for majoring in English literature instead of something more utilitarian such as journalism or communications. I've also been thinking about law school, but a trip to the real estate lawyer's office to sell my condo made me rethink that idea. (Can you say boorrrring?)

Now this insider article pops the bubble on journalism education. It basically says the rise of new media (such as blogs) means the traditional route to journalism career success is even less effective than before. More than ever, networking and opportunism count. The author cites how Fox News successfully challenged CNN, and how many prominent editors today got their positions through connections and risk-taking, not journalism school.
